You ATTACK.

You steady your BOW towards the direction the ROAR is coming from. VENRICK takes up a defensive stance and ALPHONSE bares his TEETH and draws out his CLAWS. The MARROW CUB sits in between the three of you LICKING it’s CROTCH.

Suddenly, bursting out of the treeline behind you flies a MARROW LION. It is much bigger than the MARROW CUB and much more menacing looking! The MARROW LION has fully grown CLAWS and TEETH, and much thicker bones. It’s bones have long since lost their yellow tint and are now a dark brown, stained with red. It turns to face you and ROARS before preparing to strike.

VENRICK CHARGERS, yelling at the top of his lungs.

Confused by this tiny screaming thing, the MARROW LION hesitates. VENRICK CRACKS it in the head with his MACE for 10 damage!

The MARROW LION ROARS loudly and thrashed it’s large paw out and hits VENRICK in the side, knocking him into some bushes.

My turn, you think. You take aim at the LION and release an arrow.

You completely miss.

“Damn it!” ALPHONSE yells. “You almost hit VENRICK! Back off and let me try!”

ALPHONSE dives at the MARROW LION, charging up another FIREBALL. The LION shrinks back. AL releases a powerful shot, but the LION dodges at the last minute. The FIREBALL just barely grazes it’s feet.

VENRICK begins pulling himself out of the bush. “He’s too fast! What do we do?”

I’ve got to think of something or we’re all dead meat, you think.

  • SHOOT another ARROW (Accuracy Roll)
  • CHARGE as a group (Attack Roll)
  • RUN AWAY (VENRICK R -5) (ALPHONSE R-5)

You INVESTIGATE.

With BOW drawn you work your way over to the bushes. You can feel your palms start to sweat and your hands begin to shake, but this is no time for fear! You are the hero here, it says so in your stat menu! You need to protect the other two. Slowly, you reach the bushes and look around.

Sitting in the bush you see a tiny MARROW CUB. It’s so adorable! Wait, no. It’s just terrifying.

The small skeleton of a cat begins grooming it’s yellow forearm as you sit in horror staring at this creature. You think you liked the FUFU-ABUBU RABBIT better. The MARROW CUB looks up at you and mews quietly. You lose it.

“ALPHONSE! VENRICK! Get over here!” You yell in the direction of the camp. ALPHONSE leaps into action with CLAWS drawn, while VENRICK groggily finds his MACE and follows.

“What is it? What’s going on?” They ask you.

You are too disturbed to speak. You point into the bush and make a sound not unlike a squeal.

VENRICK sighs and picks up the MARROW CUB. “What is WRONG with you? This little guy can’t do anything to hurt us. He looks like he’s just been born.” VENRICK plays with the CUB.

“How do you know it’s a boy?” You ask him.

“You see his bone?”

ALPHONSE hisses at the two of you. “Put that thing down!”

“Why?” VENRICK asks. “He’s so cute! And he’s not doing anything wrong.”

“Because” ALPHONSE says “He’s just born, remember?”

You don’t get it. VENRICK doesn’t either. ALPHONSE bangs his head against the ground.

You are suddenly startled by a ROAR. It’s different than the one in your dreams, but almost just as loud. This one sounds a lot closer though.

Just born.

Oh.

You get it now.

“You guys rest, I’ll take the first watch.”

“You sure?” VENRICK asks. “You still haven’t recovered completely.”

“It’s fine. I wouldn’t be able to sleep right away anyway.”

VENRICK nods and makes his way over to the hut. “I’ll take the second watch.” ALPHONSE says. “That way we can both watch HIM as well.” He indicates to  VENRICK. You suppress rolling your eyes. ALPHONSE rolls his eyes at you and makes his way to the hut.

You station yourself in front of a tree between the campsite your party has made and the direction that the GUARDS were in. It’s quiet enough tonight to hear if someone is coming in any direction, if you are attentive enough. It’s your job to keep the other two safe now. You pull out your BOW and examine it. You were able to hit that SCARY GUARD back there, but you aren’t sure you’d be able to do it again. You want to PRACTICE by shooting at some trees, but if you miss it would be too hard to find the ARROWS in the dark, and you only have NINE (9) ARROWS left.

You lean against the tree and look around, listening to all of the noises of the night. Something about having others lives depending on you gives you this strange high. You feel more alert than you ever have been before. Suddenly every movement catches your eye, every sound you can detect. You feel ready to take anything on!

You FALL ASLEEP.

Suddenly you are FLYING over a VAST OCEAN. There is nothing in sight for miles, just deep blue in every direction.

<GARNET is vast, HERO.  How will you manage to cross it in time?>

In time for what? Before you can get an answer, something appears on the horizon. A LARGE FLEET of SHIPS is traveling in the direction that you just FLEW from. They seem to be armed for war. A black and red FLAG hangs from each MAST.

<That is not the FLAG of any Nation or Kingdom in GARNET. Those are IMPERIAL SHIPS, but not the IMPERIAL colors.>

What is wrong with King Berron?

Suddenly you are filled.

Overwhelmed.

Something you’d forgotten, or tried to forget.

The LOUD ROAR fills every corner of your mind. The RED EYES burn before you. You can’t escape them. They are going to consume you.

You JOLT AWAKE. Your breathing is heavy. That wasn’t exactly restful sleep.

You CONTINUE running through the WOODS.

“Did you guys see the look on that GUARD’S face? I think it would be best if we put as much distance between us and them as possible.” You say.

ALPHONSE and VENRICK both agree and the three of you continue walking through the woods. VENRICK keeps scanning the area for anything that looks familiar, and occasionally runs ahead to check out certain paths. “I could have sworn there was something up here…” He mutters to himself. When he is out of earshot, ALPHONSE begins whispering to you.

“I told you he was going to be a problem, you know.”

“What are you talking about?”

AL snorts. “Maybe the squadron of IMPERIAL SOLDIERS that just chased us out of ILIAM? If you hadn’t hit that GUARD back there he might have caught us, and that’s a one way ticket to the GALLOWS.”

You look towards VENRICK and watch him climb up the trunk of a tree to get a better look ahead. At least he’s enthusiastic about helping. For the Baker’s son he has enough muscle on him. He probably did a lot of work chopping wood and stoking the fires while his parents worked. You start to think about the story he gave you about his Father. Sold into slavery to save his son. Now that’s devotion.

“I know what you’re thinking kid, but how do you know we can trust him? He could have made that whole thing up.” AL eyes VENRICK “And will you STOP calling me AL?!”

“Well then YOU stop reading my thoughts!” You snap back. “I trust VENRICK. At least for now. It explains how he survived his execution, and at least for now he’s helped us out a bit. He just needs a chance to prove himself.”

VENRICK drops down from the tree and runs over. He explains that the forest is very dense, but there seems to be a clearing up ahead. You’ve been walking for a while and there have been no signs that the guards have been following, so you agree to set up a small camp for the night. You and VENRICK construct a small make shift hut out of BRANCHES, STICKS and LEAVES that you find lying around, while ALPHONSE goes to catch FISH in a nearby river. After a small and less than satisfying meal, you all decide it’s time to get some rest.

“Ok,” ALPHONSE says, stretching out. “We need to keep watch tonight to make sure no one sneaks up on us. Who’s taking the first watch?”

  • “You guys rest, I’ll take the first watch.”
  • “ALPHONSE, you’re the strongest and most experienced, you take the first watch.”
  • “I trust VENRICK. It’s up to him to keep us safe for the first watch.”

You ESCAPE out the BACK DOOR.

If you couldn’t take out a stupid rabbit at full strength, there is no way you’re going to take out a troop of IMPERIAL GUARDS! You and VENRICK begin to panic.

“Run!” You yell.

Just as you and VENRICK turn to the door, ALPHONSE tilts his head to the ceiling and unleashes another blue FIREBALL  at the rafters above. Two large WOODEN BEAMS fall in front of the door, barricading it. “Hurry!” He shouts. The three of you bolt through the KITCHEN and out the BACK DOOR.

“One! Two! Three!” DERIM shouts as he and two of the IMPERIAL GUARDS ram against the door. It doesn’t even budge. DERIM rubs his shoulder. “Go around, then! After them! Don’t let them get away!” he screams. The four GUARDS take off, but the leading man trips over the root of a near by tree. The second staggers over him and continues on with the third GUARD, but by the time they get around the house, the three of you are already far off through the WOODS. The fourth and final GUARD throws his heavy SHIELD to the ground and takes off in a sprint after you. He is clearly faster than the other three men lagging behind him. He gains ground on you quickly.

VENRICK looks back. “Guys, we’ve got company!” He pushes himself harder to keep moving. You begin to feel the burn in your legs.

“Al!” You call over to ALPHONSE, “Hit him with some of your magic-y blue stuff again!”

“No can do, Barknuts,” He yells back. “I was keeping guard at the INN and didn’t get a chance to recover at all! That last one used up all of my MANA!”

“Hurry!” VENRICK yells.

You glance back to see the GUARD throw his BRACERS off. With each piece of armor he removes he seems to renew all of his speed. He’s almost close enough to see your face.

Quickly, you pull an ARROW out of your QUIVER. You aren’t even really sure how to put an ARROW in a BOW in general, not to mention when running through the WOODS being chased by a deadly trained GUARD. You fiddle for a few seconds before turning slightly to look back at the GUARD. He rips off his HELMET and throws it to the ground. The man has long, dark hair and a trimmed goatee. His mouth is contorted into a snarling smirk as he pushes harder to catch up to you.

You pulls back on the BOW STRING, turn your body, and aim you BOW. The string snaps loudly and you let loose the ARROW. It whizzes through the air towards the GUARD. You bite your lip as you watch it connect with his right shoulder. He screams loudly and clutches his shoulder, stopping and hunching over.

“Yes!” VENRICK yells.

“No stopping now, let’s go!” ALPHONSE shouts. “VENRICK, you know this area better than we do. Is there anywhere we can hide and set up camp?”

As the three of you continue running through the WOODS, VENRICK surveys the area. “I’m… not sure. I think there might be, but I haven’t really left town into the woods since I was a little kid… I think there might be a cave over in that direction.” He points off to the left. “I can’t be too sure though.”

“Well, we need some sort of plan.” You say.

  • CONTINUE running through the WOODS
  • SEARCH for a CAVE
  • DOUBLE BACK to TRICK the GUARDS
  • BUILD a SHELTER in the WOODS

The Codex is used to keep track of all the people, places and things the Hero encounters on their journey. New items of importance will be added to the Codex as they are discovered in the story, and previous entries may be updated as more is known about them. If you find any errors or inconsistencies, don’t hesitate to let me know!

Any item in the Codex that has been added or changed with the latest update will be written in italics

REALMS:

Earth: The home of the Hero.

Garnet: A magical realm, parallel to Earth. The Hero arrived here after passing through a Large Door. Largely inhabited by Humans and other Humanoid creatures, it resembles Medieval Earth.

PLACES:

Abandoned Warehouse: The Hero woke up cold and alone here at the start of their adventure. The only other living things to be found was a cat and a man named Dennis. From this Warehouse the Hero traveled to Garnet.

Kingdom of Sen: The first area the Hero ended up in when arriving in Garnet. It is a vast section of land under the rule of King Berron. The Kingdom of Sen is composed of many towns and provinces.

Iliam: The first town in the Kingdom of Sen that the Hero visited. Upon entering the Iliam the Hero witnessed a criminal being executed.

Northern Crossing: Crossroads north of Iliam. Venrick requests that the party take him there to escape his persecution.

ENEMIES:

Fufu-Abubu Rabbit: A small furry creature resembling Earth rabbits. They have surprising strength for such small creatures.

Imperial Soldiers: Soldiers in the King’s Army. Usually guards or sentries, found primarily in towns and outposts of the Kingdom of Sen.

Marrow Cub: A skeletal creature resembling Earth lion cubs. Marrow Cubs are generally harmless and very playful. They spend most of their time sleeping, grooming, and playing with their Mother, who can always be found nearby to protect them.

Marrow Lion: A skeletal creature resembling Earth lions. Marrow Lions are the full grown versions of Marrow cubs. They have fully developed claws and teeth, and are deadly when threatened. They are content to leave other alone, so long as they are not hunting and their young are safe. They will do anything to protect their children.

PEOPLE:

Hero: The Hero of the story. This is you! The Hero has traveled from one realm to another for an undetermined purpose. Supposedly the “Chosen One”, it is up to the Hero to prototype the fate of Garnet. But could there be something more in store for them?

Dennis: A chipper young lad with a slight limp and a British accent. The Hero met him in the Warehouse on Earth. Dennis became upset at the Hero for dancing and mocking his limp. He was never seen again.

Vodka Mutini: The name given by the Hero to a cat they found in the Warehouse on Earth. The cat soon corrected the Hero on his correct name, though, in order to avoid copyright problems.

Alphonse: The cat formerly known as Vodka Mutini. Found by the Hero in the Warehouse on Earth, he is a native of Garnet. He has a snarky personality and speaks fluent sarcasm. He claims to have been sent to collect you, the Hero, the “Chosen One” on Earth.

Venrick Haverthorne: A resident of Iliam, the Hero first sees Venrick at his own execution. He was accused of High Treason against King Berron. He later reveals that he was unjustly tried and that his execution was a fake. Venrick then joined the party.

Derim: A politician of some sort, Derim oversaw the execution of Venrick Haverthorne. Not much is known about him, except that his devotion to his King is undying.

King Berron: Ruler of the Kingdom of Sen. Rumors say he was once a good and just King, but recently became a tyrant. Not much else is known about him.

Venrick’s Father: Sold himself into servitude to a Dark Warlock in order to protect his son Venrick.

Dark Warlock: Gave a magical potion to Venrick’s family in exchange for Venrick’s Father as his slave.

ITEMS:

Dollar Bills: Two Dollar Bills of Earth’s paper currency were found in the Hero’s pockets.

String: Some String was found in the Hero’s pocket. It was later used as a leash for Alphonse, then known as Vodka Mutini.

Paper: Some sheets of paper were taken by the Hero from Venrick’s Bedroom.

Hand Mirror: A small Hand Mirror was taken by the Hero from Venrick’s Bedroom. It was hidden under Venrick’s pillow.

Bag: Given to the Hero by Alphonse, the bag holds all of the Hero’s odds and ends, nick-knacks and do-dads.

WEAPONS:

Stick: First thing the hero could grab when first confronted in Garnet. Highly ineffective.

Iron Sword: One of Venrick’s family’s weapons. Good for quick slashes.

Wooden Spear: One of Venrick’s family’s weapons. Has a long reach.

Wooden Bow: One of Venrick’s family’s weapons. Used for ranged combat. Came with 10 Iron Arrows.

Iron Mace: One of Venrick’s family’s weapons. Too heavy to swing quickly but deals heavy damage.

Wood-Cutting Axe: One of Venrick’s family’s weapons. More of a large hatchet, really.

Small Knives: Some of Venrick’s family’s weapons. Used for fast close combat or as throwing knives.

Old Worn Staff: One of Venrick’s family’s weapons. Uses basic magic with a chance of backfire.

OTHER:

Weapon Proficiency: The weapon that a character is best suited to wield. Other weapons can be used but will be less effective if not of the Proficient Type.

You TAKE the BOW.

ALPHONSE eyes you carefully. “Ok… Just be careful where you point that thing…” VENRICK looks between the STAFF and the MACE. Finally, he pulls out the MACE and closes the cupboard.

“I don’t trust that old STAFF. Besides, I’ve got a little bit of magic on my own.” He grins.

“Really?” You ask him. ALPHONSE seems surprised too.

“Yeah! Well, only as much as they teach you in school anyways… ILIAM doesn’t have the best of programs, so all I can really do is HEAL minor wounds.” VENRICK blushes and fiddles with the MACE.

“That will definitely be of use to us.” ALPHONSE says. He turns to you. “As for you, you’re going to need to learn about magic at some point too. Hopefully we can get to work on that when we’re safely out of town. For now though, let’s get this out of the way…”

ALPHONSE does something strange. You feel like you need an adult.

HERO WEAPON PROFICIENCY is now BOW.
HERO ACCURACY 1 —> 3.

VENRICK shivers.

VENRICK WEAPON PROFICIENCY is now MACE.
VENRICK ATTACK 5 —> 6.
VENRICK MAGIC 1 —> 2.

“Now remember, your accuracy dictates how likely you are to hit your target, and your attack dictates how powerful it’s going to be. As for the BOW though, where you hit can make all the difference. You’re going to need both stats to make your hits count.” ALPHONSE turns to VENRICK. “As for you, the MACE is going to keep you fighting up close, so you’ll want to keep your defense up as well as your strength. Keep that in mind, and we’ll be fine. For now.”

You grab the QUIVER from the side of the cupboard and put it on your back. Only ten (10) ARROWS. You’ll just have to be careful and use them sparingly until you can get some more. You address your two companions. “Ok, it’s about time we get going. We’ve been in town too long already.”

ALPHONSE and VENRICK both nod. “What is our plan, then?” VENRICK asks.

You hadn’t thought of that. Really, you’d only been focusing on the getting out of town part of this whole extravaganza.

Just then, a LOUD KNOCK comes from the front door. You all jump in surprise. “OPEN UP!” Yells a familiar voice. The sound of DERIM’s voice brings a flash of those RED EYES to your mind. You clutch your forehead.

ALPHONSE yells. “They’ve found us!”

VENRICK backs into the wall. “What do we do?!”

  • ESCAPE out the BACK DOOR
  • HIDE inside the HOUSE
  • ARM yourselves and FIGHT the GUARDS

You SNEAK into VENRICK’S HOUSE.

Luckily, his parents are staying with relatives during the hard time of mourning him. And they keep a spare key hidden in the flower pot. So it’s really less of sneaking in and more of walking through the front door.

You WALK through the FRONT DOOR.

“Be glad it was this easy,” ALPHONSE whispers to you. “You don’t have nearly high enough STEALTH or LOCK-PICKING to pull of something like this.”

You’re not entirely sure what these things he’s talking about are, but there is no time for questions. This is a raid! Grab what you can and go!

VENRICK points you in the direction of his room. You quickly enter. It’s a very modest room with just a bed, a nightstand and a desk with a few sheets of PAPER on it. You TAKE the PAPER. Just as you are about to leave, you see something SHINE under the pillow. It is a small HAND MIRROR. You didn’t know VENRICK was so vain. Whatever. You TAKE the HAND MIRROR. ALPHONSE calls you into a side room where he and VENRICK are looking through a cupboard.

“These are what we’ll really be needing, now that AL and I have finished packing food from the kitchen.”

“Don’t call me AL.”

“It’s where my parents keep the weapons. My Dad always believed something bad was going to happen here, what with all that’s been happening with the King lately. He was convinced we’d have to fight our way out one day.” VENRICK laughs lightly. “I guess he was kinda right.”

You LOOK into the cupboard. In it are stashed a SWORD, a SPEAR, a BOW, a MACE, an AXE, several KNIVES, and an old and worn STAFF.

“That STAFF was enchanted a long time ago. We barely touched it though. It’s so old that the magic’s kinda funky. You can never really predict when something… odd will happen.” VENRICK also browses the weapons.

ALPHONSE sits back and watches. “Choose wisely, kids.” He says. “Whatever you pick will set your WEAPON PROFICIENCY. Sure, you could still wield other things, but it’ll be awkward until you can change your PROFICIENCY to that type of weapon.”

You LOOK back into the cupboard.

  • TAKE the SWORD
  • TAKE the SPEAR
  • TAKE the BOW
  • TAKE the MACE
  • TAKE the AXE
  • TAKE the KNIVES
  • TAKE the STAFF

Adventure Got is a Text-Based Adventure where the audience votes on the Hero’s actions, and ultimately decide the fate of this magical world. The story is updated every Monday. The voting is primarily done through the polls on my personal DeviantArt account, where the updates are also posted in the Journals. If you do not have a DeviantArt account but still want to vote, the Ask Box is OPEN and you can submit your vote there. Anonymous votes will not be counted.

The Garnet Adventure story is audience driven, so it can’t survive without support. The Ask Box is also open to comments, concerns, suggestions, compliments, complaints and feedback of any shape or form. Let me know what I’m doing right and what just needs to stop, and don’t be shy about spreading the word!

To keep the story fair and generally… well, random, a lot of the outcomes of user picked decisions are decided on by the roll of a D20. The higher the roll, the more positive the results and the lower the roll, the more trouble you end up in. Remember, it is VERY possible for the Hero to die!

There are several other pages with information on the story, each with a link at the top of the page.

So, in summary, the fate of Garnet depends on you! Be sure to cast your vote and keep this Adventure going!
